WHEN? Now until 10th May 2026
WHY GO? To feel the joy of art. The Italian designer, architect and all-round inspirational creative, Mendini is an icon in the world of design. That famous Alessi corkscrew, those playful Swatch watches, a whole body of mannequin-like sculptures and most famous of all, the Proust Pointillist armchair, were all creations by the Italian post-war designer whose work is joyfully being celebrated in a solo exhibition for the first time in the UK. What a free-spirited radical Mendini was. Born in Milan in 1931, amongst his many design achievements, he was also editor-in-chief of the revered Domus architectural magazine for six years. Linked to avant-garde movements like Futurism, Mendini was influenced by Kandinsky and Malevich and indeed some of his work pays tribute to their style. From sculptures to furniture, rugs to everyday domestic objects, he collaborated with leading names like Cartier, Hermès and Swarovski, always instilling a dash of humour in the belief that design should make people smile. His philosophy has sparked endless look-alike designs but there’s nothing quite like seeing the REAL thing up close in this playful little exhibition, a treat for the whole family.
