Sequins in Summer

Who decided sequins were just for December?  A summer party wouldn’t be the same without that hint of shimmer, that golden glow at sunset and that subtle fluttering sound they’ll create as you shimmy past.  Sequins are all about having fun.  Flirty, fashion forward and full to the brim with confidence, they say I’ve got this and if you’re planning to make an entrance at your next Summer party, then this is the dress for you.
No it doesn’t have to be a Summer Ball.  Birthday drinks, your best pal’s garden party, even supper somewhere special, this is a dress that will impress every time and even more so, if you style it right.  The secret to setting a more contemporary tone is dressing them down.  Sling out those stilettos, this creamy, pearlised dress is asking for relaxed, raffia flats and don’t over-do your earrings.  Make this outfit shine with the mantra ‘less is more’… it will look more modern and you’ll have totally mastered this look.
Smart event? Cooler climate? Then add a double-breasted blazer.  Soften your look by wearing it loosely over your shoulders and add a cute clutch so you don’t get all tangled in your straps.  Reach for your Rhode bronzer, Dior plumping gloss and you’re all set to shine.

EDIT

It’s not always easy to get a bold outfit right and in summer there can be a very fine line between colourful and chaotic.  Those women that wear colour brilliantly, know exactly when to stop.  It’s instinctive; they choose one shade, commit to it and let everything else pay it very low-key compliments.

This season, sunshine tones are taking centre-stage.  Butter, saffron and mango are a far cry from your usual neutrals, but with a heat wave tan, they’ll look fashion forward and flattering and what’s more, you’re going to feel great just wearing them.

So what’s the key to getting it right?  An eye-catching dress needs low-key accessories.  No one wants to see everything competing for attention: you need to make this look like you’ve got it all under control.  Understated flats are much more now than heels, and we all know a woven leather tote is the one bag that will go with everything.

If you’re drawn to print, then make it your hero piece.  A bold tropical dress or beautifully illustrated mini needs little more than bronzed skin.  Or update a white linen shirt with a vibrant oversized, jacquard shopper.  Resist the temptation to pile on more and more jewellery… one piece is more than enough.  Of course, there’s always the exception of a limited edition hat - reach for a Flabelus x Lorna Murray design and everyone will ask where it’s from.
Keep your styling rules simple… one statement, one story.  The best outcome, is to look like you never even tried.

EXTRAS

Square Silky Scarves

The silk scarf is having one of fashion's biggest comebacks.  It isn't just about knotting one neatly beneath your chin or channelling retro, mini-break glamour… it’s become the all-ages accessory, stylish women are using to give their simplest outfits far more individuality.

The key to getting it right?  It needs to be silky and it should definitely be square.  If you're feeling body confident then do it… wear it as a top, but if this fills you with fear, try wrapping it around your favourite wide-leg trousers. Knot it around a ponytail, tie it as a bandana or simply loop it onto the handle of your favourite bag… or even around your wrist; each styling trick will say you’ve dared to try something different.

As always, the key is restraint. Let your scarf be your statement and keep everything else simple.  Work it over a classic trench, with a pared-back sundress, or with your favourite summer tote.  Understated pieces create the perfect backdrop for bold prints and saturated colour; the more graphic the scarf, the calmer the rest of your outfit should become.

If you can blow the budget, then stretch yourself to silk.  You can’t beat the beautiful way it drapes, the elegant way it ties and, if you choose well, it will stay in your wardrobe for decades to come. Liberty has long been the destination for exceptional printed scarves and remains one of the best places to start.  But ultimately, it isn’t about how much you spend, it’s about how you style it.  Don’t do another day without one.
