MILHAZES

WHAT? Beatriz Milhazes – Além do Horizonte
WHERE? White Cube, 25–26 Mason’s Yard, London SW1Y 6BU
WHEN? Now until 17 January 2026. Free to view
WHY GO? For sunshine on a winter’s day. If you fancy a break from the hectic whirl of Christmas shopping, pop into White Cube just behind Fortnum’s to be instantly cocooned in rays of carnival colour.
Brazilian artist Milhazes, born in 1960, has made a name for herself with large-scale abstract works that fuse together shades of Brazil, Europe and Japan with Op Art edgy vibes.
Having exhibited in galleries around the world including the Guggenheim and Met in New York, she brings her individual mono transfer technique art to London and these brand new works illuminate the stark white gallery.
Colour, pattern and geometrics are the essential elements of this aesthetically pleasing exhibition translated as “Beyond the Horizon”, drawing on her love of the Japanese Edo period and distinctive works of Hokusai — though some fans liken her work to that of Bridget Riley.
Brazil meets op-art in Milhazes’s collages, paintings and panoramic site-specific installation that unfurls across the white walls to create a Rio de Janeiro happy place. If only exotic works of art like this were emblazoned across our grey city, how joyful it would be to walk through town.
IN THE KNOW Over at White Cube in Bermondsey, African American artist, curator and educator Howardena Pindell talks online about her obsession with painting geometric dots. Howardena Pindell: Off the Grid is on until 18 January 2026.

Beatriz Milhazes, Happy Dreams, 2025. Acrylic on linen.
