WHY GO? To step into space. The man who once wrapped up the Reichstag and covered Pont Neuf visualised an atmospheric installation in 1968 he optimistically called 'Air', but it never got realised in his lifetime.
Finally it has been re-created for all to marvel at such creative ingenuity.
Christo and Jeanne-Claude, his wife and artistic partner, were famous for large-scale environmental works that became monumental global hits.
Their technically ambitious projects went on display for a few weeks before being removed and recycled and always caused a sensation.
Though Christo and Jeanne-Claude are no longer alive, they would undoubtedly be delighted to see their legacy live on with Air Package on a Ceiling, a vast internally illuminated package suspended across the entire ceiling of London's vast Gagosian gallery.
Rather like a parachute or cloud, the installation is constructed to resemble a diaphanous puff of 'air', and is dramatically lit at night.
It ebbs and flows and is already garnering curious visitors who wander freely around and underneath it.
Along with many of his original drawings, Christo's eclectic Wrapped Automobile – Volvo Model PV-544 (1981) is an extra bonus, as it has not been displayed for some thirty years.
He wrapped it for a friend and having seen and admired it, no one could accuse Christo of being stingy with his packaging!
IN THE KNOW Curious to know about this extraordinary creative duo? The Gagosian Gallery's Burlington Arcade cult art shop is hosting a Christo take-over with a selection of works on paper, sculptures and books on the artists' work, on until 18th July.
