WHAT? Do Ho Suh: Walk the House

WHERE? Tate Modern, Blavatnik Building, Level 2, Bankside, London SE1 9TG

WHEN? Now until 19th October

WHY GO? For home is where the art is.  Can you imagine salvaging memories of your childhood home by covering it with paper and rubbing it all over with inks to be brought back to life ‘spiritually’?

That is exactly what Korean conceptual artist/sculptor Do Ho Suh has done time over time and it has made him uniquely famous as an architectural artist.

Skill and passion inspire him to nostalgically recreate houses he has loved in all manner of paper, polyester, fabric and threads, a seemingly impossible task but seamlessly constructed in the manner of a professional draughtsman cum architect, and most curiously they are all dreamily beautiful.

This exhibition invites visitors to interact. Walk through his huge installations of dreamy houses, complete with architectural features - shelving, lamp sockets, door knockers and piping, all made in paper and fabric covered neatly in stitches and explore his quest for the enigma of a perfect home.

Diaphanous fabrics are used in an industrial manner and the contrast is playful and intriguing. It takes a strong will not to reach out to touch the finished results!

Do Ho Suh and his teams of helpers have turned the gallery into a little village of colourful fabric architecture.

Accompanying videos will appeal more to digi tech nerds and record dilapidated buildings on the brink of demolition, almost lost but with ghostly possibilities of reinvention.

Especially inspired by his homes in New York, Seoul and London where he now resides, Do Ho Suh shows his appreciation by presenting this phenomenal landmark exhibition in London, inviting us all to be part of his world of architectural art.

IN THE KNOW  To fully engage with the artist himself, Do Ho Suh is giving a talk in response to the exhibition and will be discussing his inspirational creative process on 21st June, check booking details online at Tate.
