This year’s London Design Biennale 2025 lives up to its name, Surface Reflections, and showcases a mind-blowing mix of transformative ideas from unlocking the potential of paper in architecture (Japan) to visualising the passing of time carved in wood (Poland).
While a philosophical approach might be required to unravel the theories behind each and every installation, there is no doubt that each and every exhibit is creatively powerful.
None more so than the outstanding overall winner: the 2025 medal went to Malta for a striking limestone globe that proposes a radical future for cremation – a morbid subject – but sensitively handled and beautifully crafted. Simply called URNA, it’s designed to hold the ashes of entire families, reflecting on loss and renewal.
On a cheerier note, still referencing pottery, Oman’s stunning installation Memory Grid reimagines vessels as a metaphor for life in the digital age. Vessels have held water, carried stories and embodied survival, and Oman’s 2025 debut gives them pride of place in an immersive installation that is having visitors in thrall for its innovative beauty.
IN THE KNOW Vote for your favourite global installation, and it won’t be easy! The Public Medal Award will be presented on 27th June and celebrated with a party plus entertainment by THE HERDS, a group of life-sized animal puppets who raise awareness of climate change and its effect on animals.
