WHY GO? To meet the earliest fashion influencer. Her name is a byword for extravagance, yet Marie Antoinette was a victim of her status. She went to the guillotine in a modest chemise and preferred simple pleasures like her make-believe farm. This first ever UK exhibition on Marie Antoinette portrays the significance of her style from age 17 when she became Queen to her death at just 37. Portraits, books and films have prompted countless renditions of her style, and although only a dainty shoe, earrings and that poignant chemise survive, a cornucopia of fantastical bejewelled dresses are on show representing her life at court. From powdered wigs to slipper shoes, she inspired designers like Vivienne Westwood, Moschino and Manolo Blahnik, not to forget Sofia Coppola’s lavish film. Did she actually say “Let them eat cake”? Apparently not, but it was a convenient narrative at the time. This exhibition also highlights her progressive ideas, such as encouraging breastfeeding. It is brilliantly curated and opens with a quote from her formidable mother: “All eyes will be on you” – and indeed they are.
IN THE KNOW Sponsored in part by Manolo Blahnik, who has created a capsule collection of shoes celebrating his fascination with Marie Antoinette. Available in stores and online.
