WHAT? Sarah Morris: Snow Leopards and Skyscrapers

WHERE? White Cube, 25–26 Mason’s Yard, London SW1Y 6BU

WHEN? Now until 9th May. Free to view.

WHY GO? For turbo-charged graphics. There’s an inkling of the Mad Men advertising aesthetic to this abstract exhibition by British-American artist and filmmaker Morris, who lives and works in the heart of New York.

Morris creates techno-style patterns that elevate graphic art into painterly compositions that would enhance any corporate environment or chic penthouse apartment. Ironically, her whole approach is to recreate the forces of power, as she puts it, into art, hence her images of industrial conglomerates like analytic firms and financial institutions. Far from dull, everything is colourful, geometric and full of positive energy.

If cubist artist Paul Klee was still around, he would surely have admired her modernist style with dots and dashes meeting curves and angles.

Watch the White Cube’s engaging online video of Morris introducing her exhibition and you instantly get the picture; this is a woman with a mission and she accomplishes it.

IN THE KNOW Morris translates her ideas from paintings into film, with two shorts also on show. Depicting Manhattan shot over the course of a single day, Midtown (1998) captures the regimental grids of architecture and is a fragmented view of urban life, while Chris Rock (2025), her most recent, is a reflective film about the comedian.
